Advocate for Shelter Dogs this month (and every month)!

By on October 26, 2015

All October long, we’ve brought you stories and content promoting our campaign for Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. We’re spreading the word about the wonderful work and animals you can see at the Nebraska Humane Society, Midlands Humane Society in Council Bluffs, plus Town & Country Humane Society in Papillion.

If you missed our previous articles, check them out below.

Check out how adoption helps save lives by reading this article, brought to you by The Potting Shed.

Wondering why you should adopt a shelter dog instead of buying one? We explain why here in an article brought to you by Canine Cabana.

We also brought you Five Hard to Ignore Reasons to Adopt as part of a campaign run by PetCo that seeks to explain why more people don’t adopt, plus an introduction to our campaign which centers on the importance of awareness for shelter dogs in October. Read that article, brought to you by State Farm’s Gary Kudym, here.

Our last call to action is for those of us who can’t adopt at the moment. If you can’t adopt, there are a number of things you can do to advocate for shelter animals this month, and every month for that matter. Check them out below.

Petfinder.com encourages you to adopt any time you are able, but if you can’t, it provides tips on how you can advocate for shelter dogs.

  1. Donate your Facebook status. Just paste this message into the “What’s on your mind?” box at the top of your page: “October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Save a life: Adopt a dog!
  2. Tweet, retweet and repeat the following (or your own brilliant message): “October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Save a life: Adopt a dog!
  3. Contact your local shelter or rescue group (you can search for groups near you here) and ask if they have a donation wish list or other flyer they’d like to you to post around your office or neighborhood. They may be holding special events for Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month which you can help promote.
  4. Share an adoptable dog or a Petfinder dog-adoption Happy Tail on your blog, Facebook or Twitter (hashtag #savedogs) page each day of the month.
  5. Sign up as a foster parent or shelter volunteer then tell your friends how great it is. Contact your local shelter or rescue group to find out how you can help.
  6. Add a Petfinder widget or banner to your Web site or blog.
  7. Write an op-ed about the importance of pet adoption for your local paper.
  8. Contact your local shelter or rescue group and offer to photograph their adoptable pets and upload the pics to Petfinder.
  9. Donate to your local shelter or rescue group or to the Petfinder.com Foundation in honor of Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month.
  10. Pass on an understanding of the importance of pet adoption to the next generation. Talk to your kids, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and other up-and-comers about animal shelters and why Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and pet adoption in general, is important.

Now that you know of our campaign, why it’s important to adopt and what you can do to advocate for shelter animals, spread the word and take steps to better the lives of shelter animals! October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, but be sure to keep these animals in mind all year long.
