Meet Remy: America’s Favorite Pet Quarterfinalist
We recently received a story from Dawn Giebler and her special pup, Remy. It’s one of compassion, adventure, and inspiration. Read about his amazing journey, bucket list, and quest to become America’s favorite pet below.
From Dawn:
Remy is a nine-month old mini Aussiedoodle who was born with renal dysplasia. He came into my life back in March of this year. In July he got very ill and was hospitalized. His renal panel #’s were through the roof. After an ultrasound it was discovered his kidney’s were malformed and the size of a 40lb dog (he only weighed 11lbs). His kidney’s didn’t develop properly in-utero and won’t get any better. All we can do is provide medication for renal support, prescription renal food (low protein) and regular monitoring of his kidney health – all aimed at managing the disease and provide the best quality of life for him. Remy will have a short life (average life expectancy for this condition is one year and if we’re lucky enough, up to three years).
Since we know his life will be short, we’ve put together a Bucket List of things we could do to make sure he’s living his best life and created his own Facebook page.
I then came across a competition posted on Facebook – America’s Favorite Pet
We entered and this competition motivated me to check off more adventures on Remy’s Bucket List. To date we have checked off the following:
- Ride in a jeep
- Ride in a fire truck
- Smell the flowers (for his 8 month birthday – we celebrate each month as it could be his last)
- Go paddleboarding
- Enjoy a pup cup
- Attend a dog-friendly event (NE Humane Society’s Tails N Trails at Glacial Till Winery)
- Get a caricature
- Go hiking (Schramm State Park)
- Go to Junkfest
- Ride in a motorcycle side car
- Go to the dog park
- Go to a dog bar (NE Human Society’s Music Bingo at the Dam Bar)
- Be on the radio (B107.3 yesterday! They posted a create picture on their FB page and then sent me the audio clip)
We have many more planned in the upcoming weeks which you can see on his FB page. Looking for more ideas every day and the mean’s to get them done.
The winner of America’s Favorite Pet will receive $10k in prize money & a spread in In-Touch magazine. That prize money would go a long way in helping us cross off the items on his Bucket List adventures and offset his medical/prescription diet expenses.
In the past few weeks, he has beat out 95 other pets in his group. From the looks of it, we started with over 60,000 pets of various species. Now it’s down to the top 1% – around 600. There are 9 to 10 in each group competing for a spot in the Semifinals.
Not only are we in the competition for Fame and Glory, we are checking adventures off of Remy’s Bucket List.
We are in the Quarterfinals and he has some “ruff” competition – holding steady in 3rd place.
Here is a link to his competition page where people can vote and check his status.
