Rabid bats in Omaha- Stay safe, prepared with these tips

By on September 9, 2016

The Douglas County Health Department, in a recent press release, states that it has issued a warning that a number of bats in Nebraska have tested positive for rabies, including two in the county. Exposure to rabid bats has forced several people to get rabies shots, which are extremely painful. Rabies can be fatal. In fact, rabies is 100 percent fatal if left untreated.

If you stand outside at dusk, you’ll likely see bats swooping around, eating flying insects. As the weather turns colder, bats will seek refuge inside your home. You can “bat-proof” your home by inspecting your roof lines, chimney, and any other openings on or around the roof. Caulk the openings or use window screens, chimney caps, or stainless steel wool. Any of your doors leading outside should be kept tightly closed.

If you find a bat in your home, immediately call the Nebraska Humane Society at 402-444-7800. The NHS will capture the bat and let it free in the spring. If you are bitten by a bat or exposed to bat saliva, call the Humane Society and also call your doctor immediately.
