How To Keep Axolotls As Pets?
Axolotls are mostly mistaken for fish because of their common characteristics but they are actually amphibians. They are a kind of salamander but differ a little as they don’t routinely go through metamorphosis from larva to the adult form. They stay in water for their whole lives. They are referred in most regions to as the Mexican walking fish due to the fact that they are only coming from Mexico. The most interesting thing about this creature is that when it is injured, the cells are able to multiply and therefore starting the process of regeneration.

How Should You Take Care Of Axolotls?
Axolotls are quite hardy animals and are not wild in nature. They are mostly used as display pets as they can’t interact with the owners. Axolotls have permeable skin. They are soft-bodied and delicate amphibians. They should never be handled until when it is absolutely necessary. They don’t really need a companion as they are not social animals.
If you want to keep an axolotl as a pet, you should have an aquarium of at least 15-20 gallons of water. The tank does not necessarily have to be filled with water but the water has to be slightly deeper than an axolotl’s full length. It is also important to keep the tank in a cool area that is not exposed to bright sunlight. Unlike for reptiles, there is no special lighting that is needed and it may be even better to have a place out of light. If you have to put gravel at the tank’s bottom, ensure that it is coarse gravel as fine gravel may be ingested in the process of feeding and cause some obstruction.
It is good to raise the young axolotls in different environments as they can be cannibalistic to each other. Though adults may be kept in the same enclosures, they should be watched for in case of any cannibalistic tendencies. If any of axolotls bites off the body part of another, you should act fast on separating them even if the body part of the affected axolotl will regenerate with time.
Axolotls mostly feed on worms, snails, small fish, crustaceans, and the small amphibians in the wild When kept as pets, you may feed them with earthworms, different varieties of brine shrimp, tubifex worms, small liver or beef strips, and fish pellets like trout pellets and salmon Food left uneaten by the axolotl must be cleared from the fish tank on a daily basis to help in keeping the axolotl’s environment clean.
