As the grubs grow, their diet will change from the bacteria and fungi in the compost to a more animal-based diet.

Eggshells are made up of calcium carbonate. In order to deposit calcium carbonate onto the eggshell, the hen has to first use it from her own body. As she lays eggs, she will use existing calcium in her body and deposit it onto the eggshell.
So as the hen lays more and more eggs, she uses up more and more of her calcium. Eventually, the hen will be out of calcium and will start to dig into her own bones to get the calcium she needs to lay eggs. This is called a molt.
Because the hen is using her own calcium, the eggshells will be extremely thin and fragile during the molt. The logic is that if the hen is molting, she doesn’t have enough calcium for the eggs. So, if you give the grubs, you can stop the molt as there are many different forms of calcium.
