A Growing Trend: Pet Hospice

By on January 12, 2014

The treatment of animals has become much more humane and on the top of everyone’s mind in the recent past. Different fads, trends, phenomena, and movements have popped up- some sticking around for the long haul; others fall by the wayside.

In a recent article we found in the New York Times, it has been revealed that the latest trend in treating pets with the same compassion and practice as humans is that of placing animals is hospice houses when they are near death.

We have a few partners and sponsors here at Pets In Omaha that deal with pet loss, grieving, death and funeral services, and more, but it seems they are not alone in this world. The number of hospice houses and organizations that deal in death of, support for, and loss of pets is growing across the country. Read the entire article from the Times here for more about the latest trend in pet care.

An interesting quote from the article: “The core of the debate (about whether hospice and end-of-life support is necessary) is who is to decide when is the right time to euthanize, if at all.” When we talk about the end of life, whether it is for humans or animals, people display many different opinions. Euthanasia is a controversial topic, knowing what to do near the end of one’s life is always difficult to deal with, and no one knows all the answers. For those who choose to make one final attempt at changing the life of a loved one, hospice is a popular choice these days.
