Agility contests for dogs – more than just fun and games

You’ve likely seen a dog run an agility course. Whether it’s at a local pet event or a demonstration on television, you’ve watched pups jump through hoops, climb and descend, and maneuver their way through obstacles. It’s fun to see and fun for the dogs. Something you may not have considered, however, is the benefit that agility training can provide your pup.

Agility training gives dogs a tremendous amount of confidence, helps release extra energy and stress and is a great form of exercise. Many shelters and dog clubs offer classes and training for agility. If you are in the Des Moines area, the Animal Rescue League offers classes for beginners through competition level. The ARL website says that agility training can “often alleviate behavior problems by channeling a dog’s frustration into something productive and fun. Agility training gives dogs a tremendous amount of confidence, helps release extra energy, stress, and is a great form of exercise for working breeds. It is a great way to mentally stimulate your dog as well as the physical stimulation they will receive from running the course. Agility training is also a wonderful bonding experience between owner and dog, affording a unique opportunity to develop and celebrate positive communication throughout the agility course.”
