Are Eggs Good for Dogs?

If you’re like most pet parents, you’ve probably slipped your dog scraps while cooking or eating only to stop and immediately think “Oh, no! Was that toxic?” It’s always important to research anything you plan to feed your pets and to check ingredient labels for chemicals like xylitol (a sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candies, and even some brands of peanut butter) and chocolate. On the other hand, there are many ‘human’ foods that have positive health benefits for our canine companions too, but are eggs one of them?

Research has shown that every part of the egg is good for pups, even the shell. Egg yolks contain fatty acids and almost a dozen essential vitamins. Egg whites are rich in amino acids/proteins, which play a critical role in building, repairing, and maintaining muscles. Even egg shells are completely edible and are a source of several nutrients, primarily calcium but also smaller amounts of potassium, magnesium, and phosphorous.

We had the “Eggsperts” at Braswell Family Farms weigh-in on the nutritional value of ‘chicken fruit.’ “The nutritional value of the egg is dictated by what the chicken eats,” says President Trey Braswell. “We give the birds what they need to produce a better egg for the consumer.” Braswell consults with a nutritionist over the diet for their birds and has developed their own proprietary feed formula. But what does that mean for man’s best friend? It means that Braswell Family Farm’s Eggland’s Best eggs have 10 times more vitamin E, six times more Vitamin D, 25% less saturated fat, and more than double omega-3s and vitamin B-12 than some competitors. All of this means that their eggs make a healthy, tasty, and safe treat for your dog.

The best way to serve this delicious and nutritious snack to your furry best friend is to hard-boil, let cool, peel, and slice them up. PetMD and the AKC agree that boiled is best to reduce choking hazards and aid with digestion, it’s also suggested to grind the shells before serving. AKC also states that while eggs should not be used as your dogs main meal, they are a great occasional treat. As always, consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods into your pet’s diet to find out the appropriate serving size and to rule out any health conditions.
