Big Pet Retail Stores Pull Popular Treats

By on May 21, 2014

Petco, one of the largest pet retailers in the world, has taken action after hearing the concerns from pet parents about possibly tainted treats from China. The treats, mostly chicken jerky varieties, have been linked to over 1,000 pet deaths, even more illnesses and even harmed humans.

Petco CEO Jim Myers said this in a recent statement: “We know some pet parents are wary of dog and cat treats made in China, especially Chicken Jerky products, and we’ve heard their concerns. “As a leader in the industry and the trusted partner for our pet parents, we’re eager to make this transition and to expand our assortment of safe and healthy treats, the majority of which are made right here in the U.S. Very simply, we feel this decision is in the best interest of the pets we all love and, ultimately, for our business.”

The statement above comes from an article released today by NBC News which can be found here.

The NBC report says that for years, the Food and Drug Administration has been investigating the links between illness in animals and these treats imported from the Far East. It’s sort of a wonder that they have been on the shelves of even the biggest stores for this long.

This seems like a great opportunity to endorse some of our pet partners who sell only all-natural treats, jerkies and chews. Visit our Directory page for a list of our pet partners and shop with them if you have concerns about what you’ve been giving your pups. Your first step after that is to make sure you haven’t got any chicken jerky treats lying around. Be safe and vigilant about what you are giving your pets and stay tuned for more updates like these at PetsinOmaha.com.
