How To Take Care Of Guinea Pigs

If you’re like most pet owners, you want to take good care of your pet, whether you have a dog, cat or guinea pig.

With that said, it can be quite challenging to determine the best ways to take care of your pet.

When it comes to guinea pigs, we will be covering 8 easy tips that will ensure your guinea pig is happy and healthy. Each one of the tips are ranked in order showing the most important guidelines first.

1. The Cage

It is important that your guinea pig has enough space to live in and you should purchase a large guinea pig cage. You can see more information on this on our Guinea pig cage post.

2. Location of the Cage

You should always have the cage inside of your house and in particular, you should choose a high traffic spot in your home that is between 20 – 22°C. You should also choose a spot that is not too dark or flooded with sunlight.

3. Exercise

Your guinea pig will need a lot of exercise on a daily basis in order to be healthy. You should take them out every day for lots of free floor time within a larger but enclosed space. This will help them to be more active and healthier. You should not get them exercise wheels since these are not meant for cavies and could actually cause them to become injured.

4. Trim Their Nails

Long nails need to be trimmed and they should be trimmed regularly. It is best to do so every couple of weeks. You can use a normal nail clipper but you have to be careful when clipping their nails. You have to look at the nail using a light source and be careful not to cut the fleshy part or the quick.

5. Trim Their Fur

Next, you should always trim their fur since it can grow too long and become dirty and wet. There aren’t any specific guidelines for doing so and you will need to use your own judgement.

6. Brushing

Regular brushing can help to remove the loose fur from your guinea pig and reduce how much they shed. You can brush them everyday but make sure that you use a soft brush. The more fur that your guinea pig has, the more brushing they will need.

7. Bathing

Guinea pigs don’t need to be bathed regularly but you should bathe them every couple of months. You should use warm water but be careful so that the water doesn’t go into their ears. Once you’ve finished bathing them you should gently dry them with a towel.

8. Clean The Ears

Don’t forget to clean your guinea pig’s ears. It is best to do so every other week. In order to clean their ears, you should avoid using cotton buds and instead use a cloth that has been dipped in clean and warm water.

9. Socialization

Lastly, guinea pigs love to interact with other guinea pigs since they are social animals. Therefore, you should have more than one guinea pig so that they can interact with one another and lead a happy and healthy life. If you don’t have another cavy, then you should make sure that you interact with them often and that they interact with the other pets in the household.
