Is a Cavapoo The Right Dog For You?

Getting a dog is a big decision. Dogs can be great companions and they can help make a person happy. Dogs are not easy pets to take care of. They need to be fed, walked, taken to the vet, and a person will need to pick up after the dog. Dog hair does get all over the house and it can be a real pain to clean up after. Dog hair can affect people with allergies and it can get on clothing which can bother them even after losing a home. There are some dogs that do not shed much and can be owned by people with allergies. The Cavapoo makes a great companion and this dog does not shed a lot. The dog is on the smaller side and loves to be social.

Basic Information About the Cavapoo

The Cavapoo is also known by the name the Cavoodle. This dog is not purebred but a mixture of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Toy Poodle. This makes the dog short in size. It is friendly and likes attention from their owners. The dog became popular in the 1990s and became popular in both the United States and the United Kingdom. This dog does not shed often. While a person will still find some dog hair around there is nothing to worry about.

Grooming

The hair of the cavapoo is either curly or wavy. It can be short or long. The length will depend on how often the dog is groomed. The coat should be brushed on a regular basis to keep knots from forming. It is recommended to bring the dog to the groomers once every 8 to 10 weeks. The coat should be professionally groomed to keep the hair short and to reduce shedding. The groomer can keep the nails short and properly cut them as well. The hair around the face should be trimmed as well to keep them from soaking up the food and the water. The color of the coat can be white, black, gold, or a mixture of the above. Due to the mix of the poodle in the cavapoo the dog is more intelligent and is better tolerated by people that suffer from allergies. The dog is said to be hypoallergenic and basic grooming can help the dog live by people with allergies.

Feeding the Cavapoo

This dog needs around 40 calories per pound of body weight. They like kibble and canned foods as well. If the dog becomes overweight they can have some trouble moving around and they may lose energy.

Exercising the Cavapoo

The dog is usually mellow but they still like to good for a good run. The dog will need between 30 and 60 minutes of exercise each day. They like to go for walks and they like to run around the yard. The dog will also need mental stimulation.

Training

The dog is intelligent as well as curious. They are able to learn commands quickly. It is best to begin house training early and the dog should be socialized with others in the home including other pets. They are eager to please and want attention from their owners. They should be given praise as well as rewards.

Temperament

This dog is usually laid back and is able to get along with children and other pets. The dog needs a lot of attention and likes to be involved in family activities. If the dog is left alone for a long period of time they can develop separation anxiety. They may be clingy at times but that is because they want the love and attention of their humans.

Health and Life Expectancy

If the dog is not groomed their hair can get long and this will lead to knots and tangles. It is important to keep the dog properly groom. This will also help reduce shedding and allergies. The dog does have floppy ears so it can be prone to ear infections. The eats should be cleaned on a regular basis before any problems develop. The teeth also need to be cleaned often. Smaller dogs are prone to issues and diseases with their teeth and gums. The cavapoo can live between 10 and 15 years.

Does the Cavapoo Shed?

Every dog sheds a little bit. There are some breeds that do not shed as much as others. Humans also shed. Humans shed old skin cells all of the time. the Cavapoo does not shed a lot. Those that have to dominate genes from the poodle will not shed as much as other dogs. The coat will be sleek and curly. If the puppy has more of the genes that come from the spaniel they will still shed a little but not as much as many other dog breeds. There may be some dog hair on the carpet from time to time but it will not be a large amount and it will not be there every day.

Times of Shedding

As a puppy, the cavapoo will shed more often and they will need to be brushed daily. The shedding will allow the puppy to get rid of fur that can get trapped as new fir is growing in. if the puppy does not shed the fir can be matted. If a person is able to brush the dog they will reduce the cycle of shedding. As an adult, the dog will still shed from time to time. it will not shed as often. The dog is more likely to shed between the changing of the seasons. If the dog is experiencing stress in the home it will shed more often as well. If the dog is happy and healthy this breed will not lose fir often.

The cavapoo is great for people that want a dog but need a dog that is easy to take care of and a dog that will not trigger their allergies. These dogs will need to be groomed every couple of months. They do make great companions and due to their breeding, they are hypoallergenic.
