Why Is Oatmeal Shampoo Beneficial for Dogs?
Your dog’s cleanliness will determine if you will have a healthy pet. Learn here why is oatmeal shampoo for dogs beneficial.
Shopping for healthy products is difficult enough for humans, let alone dogs. Too many goods contain harmful fillers and chemicals, including dog shampoo.
When looking for a safe shampoo that is gentle on your dog’s skin and beneficial for their thick hair, consider oatmeal shampoo for dogs. That’s right, oatmeal isn’t just for eating. If you’ve ever had chickenpox, you may be familiar with an oatmeal bath to calm itchy skin. Dogs can benefit from this wonderful grain.
To find out if oatmeal shampoo is right for your dog, check out the information below.
Why Oatmeal?
Oatmeal has been used for skin purposes for a long time. It has natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that make it ideal for treating a variety of skin conditions. These inflammatory conditions may include dermatitis, viral infections (like chickenpox!), pruritis, and acne.
One way oatmeal helps the skin is through its zinc content. Zinc is inherently antimicrobial, fighting off bacteria and fungus. This can help the skin remain clear and uninflamed.
Oatmeal dog shampoo benefits are the same as these human benefits. Itchy dogs can find some relief with oatmeal, a pH-neutral grain that soothes inflammation.
Making Oatmeal Shampoo for Dogs
Ideally, shampoo should have a few simple ingredients in it — not dozens of complex chemicals. The best oatmeal shampoo can be made at home in a few easy steps.
Using a half cup of any gentle soap, combine it with a tablespoon of oatmeal. You can also add in other beneficial ingredients, like essential oils, aloe vera, and Vitamin E. Make sure the essential oils are properly diluted by using the right ratio as too much can irritate the skin.
You can also make a paste for immediate soothing in super itchy cases. Mix four cups of water with one cup of ground oatmeal and one cup of baking soda. You can apply this to your dog’s skin for five minutes before washing it away. Even an oatmeal bath can provide prompt relief.
When to Avoid Oatmeal
Although oatmeal has a long list of potential benefits, it’s not ideal for certain skin types. Specifically, if your dog is prone to yeast infections.
As a carbohydrate, oatmeal eventually breaks down into starch, and then sugar. This sugar makes a delicious meal for yeast fungus, Candida. Also, check your dog’s food and make sure it doesn’t contain any filler oats or other filler grains.
Although most veterinarians love oatmeal shampoos for dogs that aren’t prone to yeast infections, they advise avoiding them for those who are.
More Pro Pet Tips
Using oatmeal shampoo for dogs is ideal for pups with itchy skin. Dogs get into a lot of messes, so it’s good to have a shampoo with the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that oatmeal has. Just make sure to watch for yeast infections as some dogs may be prone to them.
