7 Good Reasons You Should Consider Having a Bunny as a Pet
Dogs and cats. These are the top pet choices for most people. Dare to be different? Here are good reasons to consider having a bunny as a pet.
So, you’re considering purchasing a bunny for yourself or a loved one, but you don’t know a ton about bunnies, outside of the fact that they’re positively adorable. Above all else, you want to know if having a bunny as a pet a good idea. The short answer? Absolutely!
Bunnies make wonderful pets, for a wide variety of reasons. Outside of being inexpensive to care for over their lifespan, bunnies are awesome animals that are much more than just cute balls of fluff. In this article, we’ll tell you why bunnies make great household pets, as well as few things you can expect to love about your future bunny. Now then, let’s get started!
- They Come in Different Colors and Sizes
One of the neatest things about bunnies is the fact that they come in different colors and sizes. From bunnies that are one solid color to multi-colored bunnies, you’ll have a wide variety of options to choose from. Size-wise, some bunnies are a bit smaller than the others. However, don’t let their size in the store fool you. They will get bigger, so don’t expect your bunny to be “miniature” or stay that small forever.
- Bunnies Have a Ton of Personality
Let’s be honest. Some of the more non-traditional pets are fun to look at but aren’t super playful and don’t display a ton of personality. Well, bunnies are not only cute, but they’re loaded with personality, too! Seriously, you’ll be surprised at how energetic and playful your bunny is. Not only that, but they’re intelligent too and can learn a wide variety of tricks if you have the patience to work with them.
Want to always remember your loving companion animal? Learn about some momentos you can make to always carry a bit of them with you.
- They’re Very Affectionate Animals
One of the main reasons for owning a pet is having a furry friend you can cuddle up on the couch with during a rainy day. Well, believe it or not, bunnies are extremely affectionate and will fall in love with any human that gives them love and attention.
Just like dogs, bunnies become super attached to anyone who spends a lot of time with them or feeds them, making them a great companion. They’ll get excited when they see you, and they absolutely love being petted and cuddled, just like a cat or a dog would.
- Bunnies Don’t Require a Lot of Space
Some pets can take up a large amount of space inside of your home, which isn’t ideal, especially if you don’t have a lot of space, to begin with. With rabbits, a cage in the corner of a room is all you need to house them and make them feel comfortable. Of course, you’re going to need to get them out of their cages a lot and play with them, if you want a happy and healthy rabbit. But as long as you get them out of their cage daily for play and snuggles, they’ll be quite content. In fact, you’ll find that they actually enjoy the time they have to themselves inside of their cage, especially when they’re sleepy!
- They Can Be Potty Trained
A lot of people don’t know this, but rabbits can actually be taught to use a litter box, much like a cat. Rabbits are quite intelligent. And potty training them is as simple as putting their droppings in a litter box so they learn to go there instead of in their cage. Of course, this makes keeping after them and cleaning their cage much easier. And if you decide to let them stay outside of their cage for a long period of time, as long as you grab their litter box too, you won’t have to worry about accidents in the house.
- Bunnies Are Relatively Quiet Pets
One of the downsides of owning a pet is that they can be incredibly noisy when they feel so inclined. This can be an even bigger problem if you live in an apartment, where you literally share walls with your neighbors. The good news? If you decide to get a pet bunny, you won’t be getting any noise complaints about your new friend from your neighbors. They’re quiet animals; in fact, they don’t make much noise at all, making them the perfect pet for apartments. They do enjoy running and jumping, but even that isn’t anything to worry about, and of course, is quite adorable to watch.
- They Live as Long as Most Cats and Dogs
Without a doubt, the worst part about owning any kind of pet is dealing with the fact that one day you’re going to have to let them go. And when you’re deciding on a pet, you know you’re going to fall in love with them, and thus don’t want a pet that will leave you quicker than others. Well, bunnies live about as long as most cats and dogs, or about 10 to 12 years. So you can have some peace of mind knowing that once you bring your little fluffy friend home, you’ll have them for a long time if you take care of them. Rabbits are pretty low maintenance and don’t require much more regular vet care than dogs or cats. We do recommend that you get pet insurance for any animal, including insurance for rabbits, should you purchase a bunny, as it will help with such expenses.
Well, there you have it! Those are seven reasons why having a bunny as a pet is fun for the whole family!
Remember, bunnies are much more than cute, fluffy little creatures that are fun to look at. They’re smart, loving, and easy to care for. And, as with any pet, if you do decide to get a bunny, be sure to do some research beforehand, so you can give your new pal the best life possible. Spend time with it, teach it some new tricks, and enjoy the time you two have together! Interested in getting a bunny for yourself or a loved one? Check out the pet community on our site!
