Are pets at risk for coronavirus?
It’s a giant worry for many, and as death from the virus has now occurred in the United States, we get it. The thought that you could become infected is not unbelievable, but what about your pets?
You may have heard about a dog that tested positive for the virus in China. It’s true- a pup whose owner had the virus also has coronavirus. Kind of.
Dr. Niels Pedersen at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine wrote about the likelihood that our pets could become infected, saying it’s not easy for the virus to go from human to animal. The dog in China, for example, said the World Health Organization in Hong Kong, reportedly tested “weakly positive” for COVID-19. This article indicates that the dog may have come into contact with something that had the virus on it, explaining the weak conclusion.
So, it’s possible. It’s also a long shot. If you are taking the precautions to prevent the virus from hanging around, your pets are probably fine, too. That said, stay tuned as things seem to be ever-changing. In the meantime, use common sense and typical measures that help ward off infection during the cold season. Wash your hands vigilantly, cover your cough, use face masks as they can offer some protection, and stay home as much as possible.
