How often should you groom your dog? It depends.

As a general rule, however, it’s a good idea to groom your dog least once a month. Not only will they be cleaner, but they’ll be healthier as well!
Did you recently bring home a puppy? Want to learn how to groom a dog? If so, you’re on the right page.
We’ll be going over all the basics below—so make sure to read until the end!
Why It’s Important to Groom Your Dog
There are a number of reasons why it’s important to groom your dog. For one thing, it improves their appearance. Let’s face it, no one wants their pet to have matted fur!
In addition to that, it can minimize excessive shedding. Generally speaking, the more you brush their fur, the less they’ll shed.
Last but not least, it allows you to catch medical problems early—that way, you’ll be able to avoid major vet bills.
Step by Step Instructions on How to Groom a Dog
Not sure how to get started? Just follow the following steps!
Step 1: Brush Down Their Fur
The first thing that you want to do is give them good brush-down. Ideally, you want to use a soft-bristled brush as they’re gentler on the skin.
Start with their head and slowly work toward the rear end. Don’t forget to brush their tail as well! Remove any tangles or mats that you find.
Note: Not all dogs will be fond of grooming. The good news is that you can teach them otherwise! Find out more at Groomit.
Step 2: Give Them a Bath
Once you’ve brushed their fur, it’s time for a bath. Depending on the size of your dog, you can either do this in the bathtub or in the kitchen sink.
Saturate his or her fur with lukewarm water and apply dog shampoo. Work it into a nice lather and rub it into their skin. When you’re finished, rinse thoroughly with water.
From there, dry their coat with a towel. You can also use a handheld blow dryer on a low setting.
Step 3: Clean the Ears
Take the time to clean their ears. It’s important that they’re dry, otherwise, bacteria can grow.
Similarly, you want to check the inside for wax-build up. Why is this important? It can result in poor air-flow, which can cause infections.
Step 4: Trim Their Nails
Consider trimming your dog’s nails if they’re long. Not only can they become ingrown, but they can also become infected!
Generally speaking, it is best to cut at a low angle. Be careful with dark nails as the quick (the blood vessel) will be difficult to see.
If necessary, use a dog nail grinder instead.
