How you can help animals affected by the Philippines Typhoon
No matter how old you are, no matter where you live, your community has inevitably been affected by natural disaster. Whether it be the recent tornadoes to hit Moore, OK, or Tuscaloosa, AL; the tsunami in Japan, earthquakes in California, or Hurricanes in the southeast, we have all been affected in one way or another.
Last week, Typhoon Yolanda produced sustained winds in excess of 240 miles per hour, leaving much of the Philippines in a state of disarray to put it lightly. According to recent numbers, nearly 3,000 people are dead. Countless animals are lost, sick, displaced and unaccounted for. This natural catastrophe is the deadliest to ever hit the Philippines; some even say it is the strongest storm we’ve ever recorded on Earth.
According to Global Animal’s Web site, both the Humane Society International and the International Fund for Animal Welfare have deployed rescue teams to the South Pacific. These teams consist of volunteers, medical professionals, and veterinarians. The carnage has affected the pet population as well as the farm animal population in a devastating way. Global Animal indicates that roughly 2,665 head of cattle, 9,669 caribou, 107,367 hogs and 1,401 goats are among the affected farm population. The rescue, veterinary care and humane treatment efforts are grueling and the need for supplies is unimaginable.
Life with Beagle is a blog that typically focuses on living with beagles, featuring information, pictures, and fun blog posts. Recently, however, it took a day off from the cuteness to focus on the Philippines relief efforts. The blog is urging YOU to get involved, and we at PetsInOmaha agree. From that recent post, the Beagle blog says World Vets, among other organizations, is looking for donations as it tries to help the animals hurt or sickened from the disaster. The site also displays a great graph that lets you know exactly where your donation to World Vets will go. Here’s the breakdown:
- $1= food for a day for a hungry animal
- $25= one bottle of dewormer to treat sick animals
- $50= one crate to keep a displaced pet safe
- $250= one full box of necessary medical supplies
World Vets is a great place to donate your discretionary dollars, but it’s not the only place you can go to help. Visit worldvets.org to find out how to donate. While the World Vets organization focuses on animals exclusively, there are a myriad of other places you can make your impact felt.
To donate to the general relief fund for victims of the typhoon, visit any of these links listed below as they have dozens of options for you to choose from.

As usual, the Red Cross is out front in the relief efforts. Visit their Web site to learn how you can help. From monetary donations, giving blood, and volunteering, you have a number of choices to provide a helping hand.
We urge you, whether you are an animal lover, philanthropist, or a person who just wants to make a difference in the lives of others, to do what you can to help those in need on the other side of the world. We have a strong pet community, and a strong community in general, here in Omaha, so we at PetsInOmaha know you will consider helping those in need.
