Noise solutions for July 4th and beyond
Hosting parties can be a handful. Throughout the year, our schedules are full of official and unofficial holidays and, if you have a dog, you know how stressful ones like the Fourth of July and other big days can be. Stress is just as harmful to your dog as it is to any human. They can become irritable, overactive, or hyper-aware of what’s going on. This stress increases their blood pressure and contributes other negative health factors.
An example of the effect noise and commotion can have on pets: The fifth of July tends to be one of the busiest days of the year for shelters according to Kristina Sandstede, owner and trainer at Big Moose Dog Training. Scared and stressed dogs may run away and become lost. In order to have a stress-free Fourth of July (and any other celebration), here are some tips to help keep your dog safe and calm. Make sure that your dog is licensed and has tags! If your dog does happen to get out, shelters will know where to return him!
- Take your dog out for plenty of exercise before the party starts. The exercise may wear him down and help with any anxiety.
- Keep your dog inside when noisy events like fireworks begin. This will reduce the chance of him getting away.
- Draw your curtains and close any windows or doors. This will help hide outside activity from your dog.
- Turn on a TV or radio to help cover up extraneous noise.
- Provide a place for your dog to find comfort. This could help reduce the dog’s stress and provide a sense of safety.
- If your dog tries to hide in his kennel, you can point a fan into the kennel to help cool and drown out noise.
- If you need to take your dog out during the event, make sure that you have them on a leash.
- Provide additional blankets. This may make him feel safer and more comfortable.
- Provide your dog with a Kong or treats so that he will have a distraction.
Anything you can do to avoid a search party or time of elevated stress is helpful. Be mindful of your guests and dog during get togethers so the events can go as smoothly as possible!
