Need to know care tips for new cat owners

Cats are known for being independent, care-for-themselves animals, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need your help to keep them healthy!

Here’s a couple of things that the Nebraska Humane Society would like you to keep in mind:

Taking care of your cat starts with their inner health. Making sure that your cats have all vaccinations will help them live a fuller and happier life. It’s important to talk to your vet and make a vaccination schedule for your cat.

Here are a couple of vaccinations that your cat needs.

  • Feline Panleukopenia is the decrease in the number of white blood cells in your cat’s body which makes your cat more susceptible to infections. Vaccination is recommended for kittens, a booster a year later and then once every three years.
  • Did you know the cats are the number one carrier of rabies in the United States? That’s why getting a rabies vaccination for your kitten, followed by a booster one year later and then every three years is important.
  • Feline Leukemia is a cancerous disease caused by the feline leukemia virus and causes other cancers and immunodeficiency problems in addition to leukemia. Like Feline Panleukopenia, it is recommended for kittens, then a booster one year later and then every three years.

Don’t forget about common parasites like fleas, hookworms and roundworms, all of which have prevention measures that you can take.

Aside from vaccinations, it’s also important to keep an eye out for infections. Upper respiratory infections and urinary tract infections are common in cats.

It’s also important to take care of your cat’s appearance. Paying attention to your cat’s appearance will not only make your cat feel better, but will help you recognize early signs of health problems.

For example, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) says that excessive chewing, scratching or licking could mean that your car has allergies or make have an external parasite.

Making sure that you’re paying attention to you cats appearance and health will help your cat live the life they deserve. Order preventative care and stay on top of your kitty’s health.
