Local rescue group collecting, delivering supplies to displaced animals
Everywhere you turn, it seems, there is an opportunity to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. It’s a refreshing thing to see; these days, things we can all agree on are difficult to find. There’s no doubt the folks to our south need a hand and we all want to do what we can.
Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue is teaming up with Bailing Out Benji’s Texas chapter to collect needed supplies that will be distributed among the humane organizations that are in the greatest need. Shelters and rescues that are taking in animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey have a giant job to do. With your help, we can aid them in caring for all the new animals under their care.
Many pets are being left behind in Texas as their families seek refuge. Still others already in shelters will not make it out if the flood waters reach them. Dogs and cats by the thousands are desperate for a chance to reach a shelter farther north that will save them. Those shelters are overwhelmed with the demand for supplies.
The volume of need is huge, but the variety of items needed is quite small. New and gently used supplies are welcome; here is a list of supplies needed:
- Food (dog, cat, puppy and kitten)
- Kitten and puppy formula (powdered)
- Crates (all sizes)
- Cat litter
- Cat litter pans
- Collars & harnesses (all sizes)
- Leashes
- Blankets
- Towels
- Frontline (all dosages)
- Metal food/water bowls
All Petsmart locations, Come Sit Stay (7001 S 181st St, Omaha, NE), and Woof (2019 P Street, Lincoln, NE) are dropoff locations that are accepting supplies to be sent to shelters and rescues.
“Our first wave of supplies will be flown to Texas on a donated flight sometime the week of September 3,” says Lorie Jenkins of Muddy Paws. “Later, waves will be driven down as we have enough to justify the trip. We will continue to collect supplies until there is no longer a need. This storm is not just a Texas problem. It is an America problem. And the Midwest is known as the heartland of America. So let’s justify our reputation and give to these animals with all our hearts!”
Additionally, Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue has pledged to distribute all donations from individual donors it receives until September 30 to rescue agencies taking in animals from Hurricane Harvey. Donations may be made through the rescue’s website here.
