Meet Hearts United for Animals
Pets in Omaha is introducing yet another amazing rescue group by the name of Hearts United for Animals! Hearts United for Animals is a no-kill shelter that is dedicated to the relief of suffering for dogs and cats. Read more about their amazing work below.
Q: What is your organization called and where are you located?
A: Hearts United for Animals (HUA); located in Auburn, Nebraska
Q: When, why and by whom was the organization founded?
A: Midwest Animal Shelter was formed in 1989 and it became Hearts United for Animals in 1993. Co-founders, Carol and Dennis Wheeler, founded it.
Q: Are there board members, a president or officers for your group? Who are they and what do they mean to the group’s success?
A: Yes, we have 5 Board Members, an Executive Director, and 4 volunteer Vice Presidents. We truly work together to ensure the organization is following our Mission and providing the very best care for all animals at the shelter.
Q: What is your organization’s mission and how do you execute it?
A: Hearts United for Animals is a no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering. We take the creatures who are lost, afraid, hungry or ill and comfort them, give them a warm soft bed, good food, medical care and most of all, love.
Q: How many people volunteer for your organization?
A: We have many volunteers locally who come out to the shelter to spend time with the dogs and cats. These volunteers are a critical part to the success of HUA! They do such wonderful work with socializing the residents at HUA! We also have volunteers around the country who help with home visits, events, etc.
Q: How many animals do you rescue, foster and place in a year?
A: It really varies year to year, month to month. One month, we may take in 20 animals. The next month, we may have two puppy mill rescues, and we bring in over 120 animals. We never count the number of adoptions as a success. Our primary goal is to simply find the right match between the animals in our care and forever families.
Q: If you haven’t already, tell us what a typical day for your organization entails.
A: Our day starts very early in the morning. All 400 dogs and 25 cats need to be fed, given meds if needed, etc. The day is filled with different types of socialization. Some dogs get together for playgroups or go to the yard for agility training, while others enjoy their daily walks or yummy stuffed kongs. Some dogs come out for intense socialization with our staff while others need to be groomed or bathed. A few times a year, we throw big parties for the residents at HUA such as a St. Patrick’s Day Party, a Halloween Party, an Easter Egg Hunt, and a favorite of many – the crowning of Miss HUA! Some days we are busy with adoptions, while others we are out helping animals in need or rescuing dogs from puppy mills. Of course there is always the cleaning, trips to the vet, etc. Before we know it, it’s time for nightly routines and getting the dogs and cats settled in for the night! On Wednesdays, we hold a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for the community!

This is our dream. We will work for the rest of our lives to accomplish it.”
Q: How can animal lovers in the area help you in your mission? Donations? Volunteers?
A: Yes, monetary donations can be made online at www.hua.org. We are also always in need of items such as newspaper, paper towels, laundry detergent, scoopable cat litter, treats, etc. We have drop off locations in both Omaha and Lincoln – e-mail hua@hua.org for those locations.
