In the past, we’ve told you about pet insurance, the reasons for having it, its value, and a company that gives you a free quick quote for your pets. But until you are presented with a situation where your animal gets a severe diagnosis or becomes badly injured, it’s hard to really see the value of having a policy for your pets.

Yes. We could tell you about the benefits of having a plan and how much it could hypothetically save you, but what’s better is a real life case from a real life person who you’d think would have a policy, but didn’t.

In All Animals Magazine’s March/April 2016 issue, we’re introduced to Betsy Mcfarland, Vice President of Companion Animals for the Humane Society of the United States. She’s always had pets, never insurance. Then, her one-year-old pup tore his knee to shreds, costing her $2,000.

After that hefty bill, Mcfarland decided an insurance plan was a good idea. Since getting her pets insured, her policy has covered the costs associated with treating her animals’ seasonal allergies, dental issue, and one of her dog’s adrenal disorder. The article says “Not having to worry about mounting bills ‘made it a lot easier to focus on (Mcfarland’s) dog and what he needed.'”

The previously mentioned treatments her dogs received would have cost over $3,000, she says. With a plan, she pays $360 per year to have a giant and generous safety net. That math is pretty easy to make sense of.

If you are still on the fence about having a policy for your pets, take a look at the links above or click the Trupanion banner on our homepage. A quick quote can tell you how much you can expect to pay. You insure your home, your car, your valuables, so why not your animals?
