By on July 21, 2015

Do you know how to react when an animal is having a health-related emergency? Read about what to do in a pet emergency in this nice blog post from UPC.

To most pet owners, their animals are their best friends and four-legged children. As with children, pets can become ill or injured without warning. Since knowing what to do in a pet emergency can mean the difference between life and death, it’s important to be prepared. One of the best ways you can prepare is to take a pet first aid class.

There are several benefits to taking a pet first aid class. Here are a few:

  • You will learn about emergency situations and how to properly administer first aid and CPR.
  • Topics also include things such as properly administering medications and what should go into a pet first aid kit.
  • There is a review of some basic aspects of pet ownership as well.
  • The classes provide you with hands on training.
  • Classes are relatively short, generally only a few hours.
  • There are no special requirements for these classes other than the willingness to learn.
  • You can review the printed training materials included with the class at any time.

To locate upcoming classes near you, you can either contact your local chapter of the American Red Cross or visit them online. Sometimes local animal shelters, veterinary hospitals and pet stores have information on these classes as well.

As always, if you going through a pet emergency, PLEASE seek immediate medical help. Administering proper first aid is an essential first step but does not replace the medical attention that a veterinarian can provide. If your pet is experiencing an emergency or you’re not quite sure if it is a true emergency, please contact us. We can help.
